The west side of Chariton's square, as platted first during November of 1849 and again during April, 1850, consisted of four large lots (Nos. 1, 4, 5 and 8 of Block 10, Original Town of Chariton), each with 82 and a half feet of frontage facing the square where the courthouse eventually would be located.

Brothers Wyatt W. and Iverson H. Waynick bought Lot 5, now immediately south of the alley, for $13 on Nov. 5, 1849, during the first sale of town lots, the first purchase on the west side. Since divided into four 20-foot lots, as all lots around the square have been, the Ensley-Crocker Block, Stanton Building and the north half of the Exchange Block now are located here.
